Personality & Temperament
Our Australian breed standard describes these guys a dog with "Disciplined gameness".
But, what does that mean?
To us, this means a dog which is completely guided by their owner and will obey their commands but with a cheeky side (gameness)
In older times when dogs in the show ring would "face off" (eg: 2 males would face each other and each dog would almost stand on 4 toes to show off to the other that he is alpha dog) this disciplined gameness went a long way as the owner had to be in complete control of the situation and the dog had to listen.
Nowadays in the show ring this doesn't happen so often but the Kerry Blue will still occasionally 'show off' to other dogs, proving they are the King of the Ring.
At home the Kerry Blue is a couch potato, with bursts of energy when dinner arrives. They are living heaters in winter, with no need for a hot water bottle.
In summer they will lie across the tiles awaiting their next meal.
On the flip side, if you go for walks, the Kerry Blue loves walks. They will run in the park for hours and then snore all night.
In the fun photos section, you will see when we lived on a 50 acre farm, our dog Fergus would herd our cattle for us (with no training provided by us, because we were newbies ourselves !). They can work, play but also sleep and be the perfect house dog.
