Personality & Temperament

Is a Chihuahua the right dog for you?

Choosing the perfect dog for your family is a big decision. With so many breeds and

personalities out there, it can be tough to know where to start. If you're looking for a

small dog with a big personality, the Chihuahua might just be the perfect fit.

Big Personality in a Tiny Package
Don’t let their size fool you! Chihuahuas are full of charm, sass, and soul. These little dogs

are confident, graceful, and surprisingly adaptable. They thrive in many environments and

are especially well-suited for a unit or city living but that's not to say they can't live on a

farm either! (ask us about our Iris the herding chihuahua and we have a story or two to tell)

What Do Chihuahuas Look Like?
Chihuahuas are known for their iconic “apple-shaped” heads, perky ears, and big,

expressive eyes that seem to say it all. Their coats can be smooth (short) or long and

come in just about every colour and pattern you can imagine.

Grooming Needs
Smooth coat Chihuahuas need just occasional brushing and regular baths to keep them looking neat.

Long-haired Chihuahuas should be brushed about once a week to prevent tangles or mats.
No matter the coat type, it’s a good idea to check and gently clean their ears regularly to help prevent infections.

Training Your Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are smart, alert, and eager to please, which makes them fun to train—especially when you use positive reinforcement. They love bonding with their people and can even do well in dog sports like obedience and agility!

That said, their tiny size and big personality mean they sometimes try to call the shots, so it’s important to set boundaries early.

Puppy classes can be a great way to build good habits and help them become confident, well-mannered adults.

Are Chihuahuas Good Family Dogs?
The short answer is yes, Chihuahuas can be wonderful family companions, especially in homes with adults or older, gentle children. Just be careful with young babies and toddlers, because they’re so small, rough play could accidentally hurt them.

Still, these dogs are incredibly affectionate, loyal, and love being close to their people. They are often happiest curled up in a warm lap.

Social Life and Personality
Chihuahuas can be a little reserved around strangers, but early socialization makes a big difference. With positive experiences from a young age, they can learn to be more comfortable around new people and pets. our dogs are socialised with kids, small and big dogs to make sure that they fit any family.

So, if you're looking for a small, devoted, and full-of-attitude dog who fits easily into your everyday life, the Chihuahua might be just the companion you’ve been searching for.
